Born on October 29th, 1952 in the town of Engels, Saratov region. After serving in the naval forces he entered the Military Political School, journalism faculty in the town of Lvov. Solovov's professional career began in 1977, at the Studios of Defense Ministry, USSR, where he went all the way from being an editor and up to artistic director, deputy director of the Studios.
In 1981 Ivan Solovov graduated from the scriptwriting faculty of VGIK (The All-Union Cinematography Institute), and in 1987 - from the film directing faculty of same: during all these years he went on with his work at the Studios of Defense Ministry.
During the years 1994-1996 he taught for the Moscow Institute of Culture.
In 1988 Ivan Solovov founded and became head of Mentor Cinema Film Company owning its own technological base with a full cycle of film-making, be it proprietary or commissioned products, features, documentaries or serials.
Mentor Cinema still remains professionally successful and has the leading positions in Russia's film industry.
Mentor Cinema's films were made on commission of and supported by the State Duma of the Russian Federation, the Government of Moscow, the Navy of the Russian Federation, Frontier Corps of the Russian Federation, Ministry of Education and other services.
Solovov has to his credit more than 40 documentaries and features which were made at the Central Studios of Documentaries, "Tsentrnauchfilm" Studios (Studios for scientific popular films), Sverdlovsk Film Studios, Mosfilm and Mentor Cinema Company.
The list includes "Autograd" (1994), "The Border of Russ" (1994), "The Face of Genocide" (1994), "The Storm in the Balkans" (1994), "Four C's" (1995), "Fathom Thyself" (1996) and others.
Laureate of the International Film Festival of Documentaries in Leipzig. Laureate and diploma holder of the All-Union Festivals of Sports Films in Riga (for the film "Windglider's flight") and in Kaunas ("Song of the Sail"). For his film "Admiral Krusenstern" Solovov took the first prize at the Moscow All-Union Festival of war films and was also named the best director and script-writer. Also Ivan Solovov has to his credit high awards at International festivals in Sofia (Bulgaria) and Versailles (France).
He is also the holder of silver medal of Dovzhenko Studios (USSR, Moscow) for the film "The Times of the Third Carthage".
The holder of the "Golden Knight" prize at the Tiraspol International Film Festival.
Prize of the press winner at Belgrade IFF (Yugoslavia) for "The Face of Genocide").
For his film "The Caravan of Death" (1992) Solovov was awarded the IFF prize in Saint Raphael (France).
Special Prize at the 28th international television festival in Zlatnata Rakla (Plovdiv, Bulgaria)
Director of nine full-length features, the most popular among them being: "In the Neck of the Woods" (1991), "To Sleep with Someone Else's Wife, eh" (1992), "Executor of Sentence" (1992), "Caravan of Death" (1992), "The Black Ocean" (1998), "Hot Spot"(1998), "The Saint and the Sinner" (2001), "Avalanche" (2001), "Railway Romance"(2003), a full-length feature and its 4 episodes' tv version, "Ivanov's War" (2007).
